Drama about a fictional British Royal family set in modern day London, who inhabit a world of opulence and regal tradition that caters to any and every desire, but one that also comes with a price tag of duty, destiny and intense public scrutiny.
Starring: Elizabeth Hurley, Joan Collins, William Moseley, Alexandra Park
I started watching this show because it was developed by the guy who created One Tree Hill (which was definitely one of the good contemporary shows to hit our tv screens) and because the guy who played King Peter in the Chronicles of Narnia plays Prince Liam in the Royals.
The Royals revolves around the messed up private lives of the members of a fictitious British Royal family who pretend to be classy and composed in front of the public. Season 1 is ten episodes long and is supposed to be inspired by the play Hamlet.
What works in favour of this show are its soundtrack, dialogues, wardrobe (it is steal worthy!), the relationship between Price Liam and Princess Eleanor and an ensemble of good looking as well as talented actors. What doesn’t work in its favour is the story. It is predictable and full of clichés. The younger brother of the king wants the throne for himself. The playboy prince falls for a sweet commoner. The princess falls for her bodyguard. The queen has an affair. The King gets attacked. The story, it seems, has been inspired more by page 3 sections of a newspaper.
However, the show still is entertaining to an extent, mainly due to the sassy Queen, the rebellious Princess (who rocks !!!) and the cunning yet stupid brother of the king. I’d say you should watch the first episode and the last three episodes of the season and you are good to go. It is a fun way to pass the time.
Recommended for the fans of One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl and The OC.
